Eun Sun Kim arrived at San Francisco Opera in August 2021, at a time when the company had just started performing again after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The cancellation of a season and a half of performances forced the Opera to postpone premieres and recast productions. But the ongoing challenges facing the company and the art world at large didn’t scare Kim off.

On Oct. 17, the company announced that Kim has extended her contract an additional five years, running through the 2030-31 season.

“In honor of those who believe, as I do, that the work we do matters deeply, I have accepted the offer to renew my commitment to San Francisco Opera,” Kim said in a statement. “I am honored each day that we strive together for the highest artistic quality, and I look forward to undertaking my first Ring cycle here in the coming years.”

From the start, Kim’s artistic plans have included conducting one opera each season by Verdi and Wagner. In addition to leading performances of Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” at a future date still to be announced, the Opera confirmed that a new production of Wagner’s “Parsifal” is already slated for the 2025-26 season.
